'CBGB is a toilet.
An impossibly scuzzy little club

CBGB is also the most significant night club in Rock 'n' Roll history. The birthplace of the worldwide Punk Rock scene in the mid 70's, CBGB launched the careers of bands like the Ramones, Talking Heads, and Blondie. These bands started the Punk revolution as we know it, later spawning New Wave and eventually today's Alternative Rock. CBGB made this all possible. The Whiskey a-Go-Go, The Filmore or The Cavern can't hold a friggin' candle to CBGB. In the mid-70's rock music had turned into this sickening formula of bloated stadium rock bands consisting of dudes with bad perms and even worse guitar solos. Then there was disco…. we won't even get into that. It was this dissatisfaction with the current music scene, combined with a declining America, the after effects of the Watergate scandal, and the shitty economy, that pissed off America's youth and gave rise to Punk Rock. It's 2001 and we're still pissed off. We're The CBGBs and we're paying tribute to the underground rock club that started it all. We do it all. High-energy, chainsaw-style Ramones blitzkreigs. Psychotic Talking Heads tunes. Blondie bombshells by three punks dreaming about Debbie Harry. A few other artists drip in from the same era when punk was hitting the mainstream in the late 70's. We'll take you back to that club, that era, that music, and even that smell of the piss on the floor. OMFUG. |
